Although this is one of my favourate shots of the whole night (took several tries to get it right), I fail to come up with a title for it. Something surreal maybe?

I which I could tell you, but I have no idea what this is. (Just like the other photos of the same location.) Which is kinda funny, because I have been there many years before, when the container terminal was still in operation, but seeing it all disassembled, it’s very hard to figure out what was where.

As you can probably tell by the way the warning tape danced, it was a pretty windy night.

Finally the last photo I’ll post of this location taken during daylight. This pile of debris was nearby the disassembled cranes and such. I have no idea what this once was.

Took a lot of pictures of this huge concrete remnants and I really struggled to pick ‘the one’ I’ll post.

Here’s a detail shot of the disassambled container terminal. While it might not be particularly interesting, I still like the colors and the shallow depth of field.

OK, while this is not really a photo of the actual disassembled container terminal this thing was on the general area preparing to flatten everything in its way. What more can I say?

And yet another shot from the container terminal. I hope you’re not bored already, but there will be at least another 5 photos from this location, because it was awesome. (And very hard not to pick a photo of a certain object twice.)

This one was shot with my Voigtlander 50mm/1.1 almost or actually wide open.

Another photo from the dismantled container terminal. This a part of a big crane used to pick up containers from the train wagons to put them onto the trucks for further transportation.

At least I guess that’s what this is. I wish I’d be more certain, but I was hard to recognize which parts are what. Especially when you’re looking for a good shot.

Oh, and this is a (tenderly processed) HDR made from a handheld shot sequence.

Old container terminal in Nuernberg, Germany. After the new terminal at the port started up, most of the Cranes and such were carefully dismantled, in order to be transported to their new home (most likely the city of Essen) to be reassembled there.

Please dont ask what you see on the photo. I have no idea, other than that it’s a spiral staircase lying on the ground.

I took a lot of photos there during the day and at a full moon’s night.

This sunday the weather was just too nice to stay inside the house, so I went where it often draws me to: The reservation in Tennenlohe, near Erlangen, Germany. The area is a former training area of the US troops stationed here. See former post of the lovely stallions here.

The first thing that happend once I got there, was a mosquito stung me right in the back of my head :P I guess that’s the price I have to pay for have such an awesome haircut…

In any case, I went there as late as about 7pm to take advantage of the golden hour. This scene of the beautiful flowers in front of the golden grass immediate cought my attention and risked a few mosquito bites more to take the photo. Life is very dangerous as a photographer.

Oh, and except for the 2×1 crop the photo is completely untouched. No post processing at all.

This is one of the first HDR photos I tried using my new camera. And since it lacks an exposure bracketing function (who needs that fancy stuff anyway? ;) I simply put it on my tripod and fired away in eight different shutter speeds. During post processing I thought to myself: What the heck? I just use all eight photos to create the HDR. Plus I wanted to create a more realisticly looking result than the last post, so here we are. I think it turned out to be a quite balanced look.

btw: While watching the photos at home I noticed that the fence is bent in*wards. It looks like they dont want someone to get *out of there. Very strange, given that it is no prison or the like. (Even stranger is that I noticed this not right there on the spot. But I guess being very distracted by the mosquitos qualifies for an excuse.)

While visiting Wuerzburg, Germnany with my collegues and co-workers on a trip, I had a chance to take this photo. It’s a floodlight permanently installed there to light the old famous Fortress of Wuerzburg.

Fortunately (for the photo, not for us), the weather was very ‘unstable’ and it rained every now and then. But this weather conditions were responsible for an awesome sky that I emphasised in HDR postprocessing.

I really like the dramatic mood of this one, even though I bet some of you think it’s overdone.

Last one of the ‘grainy’ series. As promised, this one has seen quite some post processing. And it has a totally different feel to it than the previous two.

This is the only one that’s based off a HDR processed photo, done in FDR Tools. I used the ‘Basic’, free version for this.

Now the obligatory question: Which photo of the ‘amidst the grain’ series did you like most? #1, #2 or #3? I’m really looking forward to hearing what you think.

This is the second photo in a series of three I took amidst a grain field in Bavaria, Germany. (See the first one incl. exact location here.)

This one looks (and feels) a little colder, but I like it a lot. This field here was right next to the one in the previous photo, just divided by a small way.

What do you think?

Tease: Be sure to stay tuned for the third in the series, which will be the most drastically postprocessed photo of the three.

This is the first photo of a series of three I will put up over the next few days. They are all shot at the same day, (roughly) the same time and at the same location, a grainfield east of Bamberg (map), Bavaria in Germany.

Each one is differently post processed and are hard to compare. Nevertheless I’d be more then happy if you’d tell me what you think about the photos/post processing and which one you like best.

Now this is a shot from the archives. I took this almost a year ago and stumbled upon it again while browsing through some photos. After some color casts and a nice 2×1 crop I really like this one, although I understand that something blurry like this is not everybody’s taste. But after tinting the photo in red and together with the blurriness it creates a certain kind of mood that works for me.

Concerning the strange looking wall to the left: I think I was playing around with the zoom during exposure. Again, very experimental, but I like it.

What do you think?

This is a shot I took a while back, when I was coming from Regensburg and walked all the way from the Main Central Station back home. (Instead of taking the underground.) Anyway, this washing parlor is right next to where I live and I found the place deserted when I was walking by. I guess it would have been a little bit more interesting with people in it (although I’m not sure if I dared taking a photo). But then again, without people this place has a certain charm as well…

This Tuesday I went fishing (angling?) with my pals Alex and Frank. Actually, they where angling and I was watching. I brought my photo stuff and there was this amazingly looking ‘thing’ right next to the lake ‘Rothsee’. Here.

This sunday sky afternoon looked just amazing. That’s why I simply had to go outside (without an actual destination) trying to capture this in some way. When noticing this railway sign I remembered a somewhat similar shot to this one so I gave it a try.

I had a problem in post though. Thus the discomforting grain. Have to look into this some time soon.

This friday I drove to the old drive-inn cinema in the Marienberg area of Nuernberg.

The drive-inn was opened back in 1969 (special year for me ;) and the silver screen measures 15×36 meters. The Area is 60k square meters big and holds up to 1111 cars. The last movie shown after 35 years was “The Two Towers” in the end of 2002. Since then the aera is more or less unused. A nearby Audi-Subsidiary (ab-)uses the silver screen now as a huge billboard.

This is another photo of the piece of art next to the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz, Germany. Unfortunately I was unable to get some information about this thing b/c I have no idea, what it’s called. I suppose there was a little sign next to it, at least giving it a name but stupid like I am, I nether remember it nor was I clever enough to take a picture of it. This picture was taken a while back, when I was on my way to the JAX09 Java Developers Conference in Mainz. I decided to go there by train and while I was waiting for my train to arrive there was another ICE sitting there on the rails. The reflections of the early morning sun (it was about 8am) plus the sweet clouded sky quickly convinced me to rip my camera out of my bag and shot the scene. After some HDR postprocessing and my beloved 2×1 crop this is what I came up with.

Was visiting my dear ‘almost goddaughter’ this weekend. We had a real funny kid’s birthday party and on the following day we went for a little bike ride that led us into a beautiful park garden, which is where I took this picture. Granted, you cannot see anything of the nice park but I mentioned it nevertheless so you can imagine the scene.

I always wanted to take a photo of her like this one. I set my standard lens to 18mm, stepped on a park bench, focused her from above and told her to look straight up into the camera. It took 4 or 5 shots but was no big deal. After all, I’m very pleased with the result, although you can see that she was not really in the mood for taking photos :)

Went to the “Nord-Ost-Bahnhof” in Nuernberg with a photo-friend of mine. He came up with the idea of going there because he shares my passion for decaying things. So there are these train wagons which must be standing on this abandoned rails for quite some time now. Actually there is a restauration station just next to the rails where the famous Train-Museum of Nuernberg fixes some old wagons and locomotives.

Inspired by the incredible light painting art pictures I’ve seen the other day, I tried to play a bit around with my fashlight at night. These scenic wagons seemed to be a benefitting surrounding for this experiment.

Five Przewalski-stallions from the Nuernberg and Munich zoos were brought into the fenced-in area of the former LTA Tennenlohe. Later mares shall follow. 60 years ago the last Przewalski horses became extinct in the wilderness. If the population will grow in the LTA they can be brought back to Kazakhstan or Mongolia. The horses are grazing the natural sandy area and prevent bushes and trees from covering it.

OK, this sunday I went to a friend of mine to pay them a long due visit and to take some pictures. To practice some flashing, I should say. When it comes to shooting with speedlights I consider myself a student at best. (Yes, I’m reading thru all the strobist 101/102 posts – that’s what inspired me to start with strobes in the first place :)

Anyway, after a few decent shots, we decided to experiment a little with the flashes. Placing them in extreme positions and so on. As you can see, after some postprocessing, this shot (Lensbaby and 2 speedlights placed slightly behind the model on both sides at even level) turned out to be quite interesting.

Well, what should I say. Still at Zucker Bär. I can see that it’s possibly a little boring to always see pictures of the same location, but it simply awesome there. At least if you have a thing for rotten locations like that.

Ok, this is also the first time that I had a chance to test my new cheap flash triggers out in the wild. Unfortunately I wasn’t that well prepared in that I had only insufficient means for softening the speedlight (which was my good old trusty sb-24), considering the size of the object. Anyway, although the lighting is far from being done well, for a first try the photo is not too bad. Postprocessed only minimal, the raw result was already quite impressive.

Whatever that thing was, I think we can be sure that it was in some way used for producing sweets. To take this shot in the abandoned factory of Zucker Bär in Nürnberg, I set my camera to manual and let the aperture open for 10 secs. During that time, I took my NiteCore Golden Dragon flashlight and ‘painted’ the scene with light.
